How will you begin?

In her book The Vertical Interrogation of Strangers , writer Bhanu Kapil traveled through India, England and the US talking with women and asking, “Is it possible for you to say the thing you have never been able to say, not even to the one you have spent your whole life loving?”

She used several other specific questions:

  • Who are you and whom do you love?
  • How will you begin?
  • What is the shape of your body?
  • What do you remember about the earth?
  • What are you waiting, or what are you wanting, to be asked?
  • Describe a morning you woke without fear.

The questions prompted compelling answers, but for our purposes, let’s return to the questions themselves. Choose at least one and write a brief essay, paragraph or cluster of sentences. Or create an image or design something...
